Black Mirror Season 7 Trailer Is All About Virtual Reality, AI, And How Both Will Murder Us

The latest season of the sci-fi anthology series Black Mirror is almost here, and today Netflix released a trailer that not only showcases the upcoming episodes’ stellar cast, but also suggests that each standalone story appears to have an overarching theme: the dangers of games, virtual reality, and/or artificial intelligence.

Showrunner Charlie Brooker told Tudum that season seven, which is comprised of six episodes, is, “A little bit OG Black Mirror. It’s back to basics in many ways. They’re all sci-fi stories—there’s definitely some horrifying things that occur, but maybe not in an overt horror-movie way. There’s definitely some disturbing content in it.”

One of the episodes, we know already, is a sequel to the previous Black Mirror episode “USS Callister.” We see snippets from that episode in this trailer, but most of the video focuses on other episodes, including one where a scraggly long-haired Peter Capaldi appears to be an AI evangelist who, perhaps, may support AI over human life? We also see characters blend into a virtual world where AI characters are very much alive. (Or are they?)

Netflix also announced additional cast members today, which are added to an already long and impressive roster that, in addition to Capaldi, includes Paul Giamatti, Awkwafina, Rashida Jones, Issa Rae, Cristin Milioti, and Chris O’Dowd. The newly announced actors we’ll also see in some dystopian sci-fi version of our world are Michele Austin (Hard Truths), Ben Bailey Smith (David Brent: Life on the Road), Asim Chaudhry (People Just Do Nothing), Josh Finan (Say Nothing), James Nelson-Joyce (The Outlaws), Will Poulter (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3), Jay Simpson (Pride & Prejudice, The Holiday), and Michael Workéyè (This Is Going to Hurt).

Season seven of Black Mirror premieres on Netflix on April 10, 2025.
