Chappell Roan’s “The Giver” is a big hit on Billboard’s country charts, though it has yet to be … More
Three weeks after its debut, Chappell Roan’s brand new single “The Giver” is still a big hit on several Billboard charts. The tune arrived with a bang, quickly finding success on a handful of country rankings and even showing signs of pop crossover potential. It hasn’t completely taken over the airwaves just yet, but it’s proving to be a steady performer. And yet, for all its traction when it comes to sales, streaming, and even at pop radio formats, there’s still one very specific chart where the track hasn’t made an appearance — and that absence says a lot about the genre jump Roan recently made.
“The Giver” Marks a Surprising Shift for Chappell Roan
Roan has spent the past few years cementing herself as one of the most exciting new names in pop music, thanks to tracks like “Good Luck, Babe!” and the viral smash “Pink Pony Club.” The latter, which first dropped years ago, is still climbing on several rankings in America, and has suddenly become a genuine hit. But with “The Giver,” Roan pivoted into brand new territory.
The single kicks off her next era with a bold move into country pop, and it seemed to immediately resonate with listeners. Upon its release, “The Giver” debuted inside the top 10 on most of Billboard’s country charts.
This frame, the cut steps up from No. 7 to No. 6 on Hot Country Songs and holds at No. 5 on Country Streaming Songs. But despite the streaming wins and sustained sales, there’s one place “The Giver” has never appeared: the Country Airplay chart. That absence is telling.
Pop Radio Loves Chappell Roan, But Where’s Country Radio?
While country programmers have yet to jump on “The Giver,” pop radio has become increasingly receptive. The song appears on two of Billboard’s three pop-leaning radio lists this frame, and it’s moving up both.
On the Adult Pop Airplay chart, Roan improves from No. 36 to No. 32 in the tune’s third week on the tally. Meanwhile, on the more youth-focused Pop Airplay ranking, the tune climbs from No. 35 to No. 27 in its second stint.
But the absence from Country Airplay – Billboard’s longest radio-based genre tally, which includes 60 positions – means country radio has yet to come on board in any meaningful way. Even a minor placement in the bottom rungs of the ranking would signal interest, but so far, “The Giver” hasn’t cracked that threshold. That’s a bit shocking for the current winner of the Best New Artist Grammy.
“Pink Pony Club” Hits No. 1 at Pop Radio
As Roan waits to see whether country radio will warm to “The Giver,” she scores a massive win elsewhere. “Pink Pony Club,” the fan-favorite anthem that helped build her dedicated following years ago, is now one of her biggest hits.
This week, the cut rockets to No. 1 on the Pop Airplay chart, rising from No. 4 to the summit. That makes it her second ruler on a radio-focused Billboard ranking — and perhaps her most surprising one yet, given the song’s age and unconventional path to the top.
Elsewhere, the tune continues to perform across multiple pop radio formats. It lifts to No. 8 on the Adult Pop Airplay list and reaches a new peak of No. 18 on the Adult Contemporary chart. At the same time, it’s still inside the top 10 on the Hot 100, Radio Songs, and Digital Song Sales rankings. Over on the Streaming Songs tally, it’s hovering just outside the upper tier.
