Democratic National Committee (DNC) chair Jaime Harrison said he thinks “history will show” House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) as “the most inept Speaker of the House in my lifetime.”
Harrison made the comments while appearing on The Saturday Show with Jonathan Capehart when asked about the current chaos roiling the House over spending bills and a looming government shutdown. Harrison responded by saying he has “worked on the floor of the House” and has “never seen anything like it.”
“I think he just wants a portrait in the Speaker’s gallery, but I don’t think there’s a ‘Speaker-in-name-only’ gallery,” Harrison said of McCarthy. “They’re gonna give him one, but this guy is pathetic.”
McCarthy has expressed his open frustration with the recent disagreements by House members on proposed spending bills, chastising those like Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) for their opposition to the bills.
“This is a whole new concept of individuals that just want to burn the whole place down,” McCarthy told reporters Thursday.
“That doesn’t work,” McCarthy said. “Look, I know it’s an obstacle. I find it as a challenge, and we’re gonna solve it.”
Harrison also took a swing at House Republicans for their recent impeachment inquiry into President Biden. He called it “baseless.”
“As we say in the South, Jonathan, ‘Bless their hearts,’ because they just don’t have a policy agenda,” Harrison said.
