Danelo Cavalcante, an escaped prisoner convicted of first-degree murder, was sighted twice on Friday in Chester County, Pennsylvania, where police have doggedly scoured a residential area for more than a week, and are warning residents the man they’re chasing is “extremely dangerous.”
Both sightings on Friday came in a wooded residential area in Chester County, Pennsylvania, where state, local and federal police have been searching for Cavalcante for 10 days, Pennsylvania State Police confirmed in a post on X.
Cavalcante had last been spotted in Longwood Gardens, a popular botanical garden south of Chester County Prison, forcing the garden to close until further notice.
Police had expanded their search for Cavalcante—who had been sentenced to life in prison earlier this summer on first- and third-degree murder charges—to cover between eight and 10 square miles in Chester County, nearly 25 miles west of Philadelphia.
400. That’s how many local, state and federal officers are involved in the manhunt, according to Pennsylvania State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens, who spoke to reporters on Friday. Police have also used dogs in their search, lined a state highway, patrolled fields on horseback and deployed a helicopter to search over the area.
Cavalcante, 34, has been on the run since escaping from Chester County Prison last Thursday, less than a month after he was convicted on multiple charges for fatally stabbing his then-girlfriend Deborah Brandao in 2021. He was sentenced to life in prison. Prosecutors in the case called Cavalcante an “angry and jealous boyfriend” and argued Cavalcante carried out the murder after Brandao threatened to inform police about a separate murder Cavalcante is suspected of committing in his home country of Brazil. After his sentencing, officials in Pennsylvania had planned to transfer him to a state correctional facility, where Chester County District Attorney Deb Ryan said this week he will still be sent if he is captured.
Cavalcante pulled off his escape by crab-walking between two walls at an outdoor exercise area, running across a roof and scaling a fence that had recently been topped with razor wire after another similar escape in May, prison officials said this week, releasing a video showing Cavalcante’s crab-walking maneuver. Officials also said a prison guard stationed at the time in the prison’s observation tower did not observe Cavalcante escape, and that his absence was only detected after a routine check-in. That guard was placed on administrative leave this week and has since been fired, sources at the prison told the Philadelphia Inquirer and CNN.
