The found-footage series The Creep Tapes is officially getting a second season on Shudder. The series revisits the premise set up in the films The Creep and The Creep 2 by writers and executive producers Mark Duplass (Biosphere) and Patrick Brice.
In these films and the series, a serial killer (Duplass) lures unsuspecting videographers to ostensibly create a documentary of his life. After they get behind the camera, however, the synopsis of the series explains that “the killer’s questionable intentions surface with his increasingly odd behavior and the victims will learn they may have made a deadly mistake.”
“A little over ten years ago, Patrick Brice and I spent a week together in my cabin with a small digital camera,” Duplass said in a statement announcing the show’s debut. “We emerged with a found footage horror film that was so wildly strange and uncomfortable we assumed no one would see it. To be continuing this unholy legacy in the series format is a true nightmare come true.”
The first six-episode season of The Creep Tapes premiered on Shudder this November. According to Deadline, it debuted as the most-watched Shudder show of all time on AMC+, and had the strongest release in Shudder’s history. No doubt because of this, Shudder has greenlit a second six-episode season, which will premiere on Shudder and AMC+ sometime later this year.
“We made the first season of The Creep Tapes completely independently, so we were able to truly and unabashedly get our freak on,” Duplass told Deadline after the second season renewal. “The fact that so many of you watched it that Shudder not only asked us for more but asked us to go even further this time around? That’s just… really, really unsettling. And terrifically exciting.”
Brice added, “We are beyond delighted at the opportunity to bring audiences fresh kills from the closet in a second season of The Creep Tapes! For the series to have found such a rabid audience at Shudder is an absolute dream. It seems ridiculous to apply the term ‘labor of love’ to such an insane franchise, but it’s the truth. We can’t wait to dive back in.”
