There’s nothing worse than having to scrub burnt grease or stubborn stains off of pots, pans, or stovetops. Depending on the mess, you can spend hours trying to clean it. Sure, there are countless cleansers you can buy, but they don’t always do a good job. If you’ve been searching for a route to boost the strength of your washing powders, it turns out that, with the right preparation, using eggshells might be your best bet.
A clip demonstrating how to turn eggshells into a cleaning powder is trending on social media, racking up nearly 73.4 million views. Lese Mmolotsi, a digital creator specializing in home cleaning techniques, broke down how to create a simple washing solution.
Instead of tossing out your eggshells, save them. Then, to sterilize them, rinse them and place them in a pot of boiling water to burn off any germs. Afterward, bake them in the oven for a few minutes to dry them out so they’ll pulverize easily. Then, grind them in a food processor or blender until the concoction resembles a powder. Lastly, combine the eggshells with a spoonful of baking soda and washing powder.
Social media users raced to the comments to share their thoughts. One person mentioned, “It’s basically an eggsfoliant.” While another follower shared, “I do this all the time. I love it.”
I decided to test this out in my kitchen, taking an old cookie sheet and comparing this eggshell concoction to a traditional cleaning powder. The results didn’t vary too much; they both were able to tackle tough grime, but I will say that the eggshell version did it quicker.
Keep in mind that this eggshell cleaner is very abrasive, so I wouldn’t recommend using it on a glass pan because it may leave tiny scratches over time. But if you have a rusty pot or stovetop surface that needs tidying, save yourself the elbow grease and give this eggshell cleaner a try.
