Trailer for The Strangers Prequel Hints at Origin Story for Masked Murderers Who Kill for Funzies

Does Tamara live here? That’s what a woman cloaked in shadow asks a loving couple in the first trailer for The Strangers: Chapter 1, a prequel to the popular horror franchise spawned by the 2008 film starring Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman.

Those who’ve seen that film, or its 2018 sequel The Strangers: Prey of Night, know that this woman’s query is far from innocent. What follows involves three masked individuals (strangers!) terrorizing and, presumably, trying to murder the couple, played by Madelaine Petsch and Froy Gutierrez.

Here’s the official synopsis:

After their car breaks down in an eerie small town, a young couple is forced to spend the night in a remote cabin. Panic ensues as they are terrorized by three masked strangers who strike with no mercy and seemingly no motive in The Strangers: Chapter 1, the chilling first entry of this upcoming horror feature film series.

This simple, terrifying premise is at it again! The apparent prequel is the first in a trilogy, with the second and third installments set to come out later this year. All three come from director Renny Harlin (Deep Blue Sea, Exorcist: The Beginning), with scripts from Alan R. Cohen and Alan Freeland (and Amber Loutifi for the second two). The story for Chapter 1, however, comes from Bryan Bertino, who penned the 2008 and 2018 films, hinting that these movies all take place in the same universe. Or maybe it’s a remake? It’s not totally clear, though my money is on it being a prequel. Either way, it looks like some strangers—presumably played by Rachel Shenton, Gabriel Basso, and Ema Horvath—will be trying to kill folks for no known reason.

The Strangers: Chapter 1 premieres in theaters on May 17, 2024. Check out the trailer below. icon-paragraph-end
